The Art of Natural and Organic Skincare Formulation: Understanding Plant Oil Heat Sensitivity and Precise Temperature Control
Introduction
As a natural and organic skincare formulator, my passion lies in harnessing the power of nature to create products that not only benefit the skin but also respect the environment. One of the key aspects of my work is understanding the sensitivities of plant oils and selecting the right ones for each product. In this blog, I will take you on a journey through the fascinating world of plant oils, their heat sensitivity, and how it influences the creation of our luxurious Skin Whipped Body Butter, with a special focus on the precise temperature control we employ during the formulation process.
The Sensitivity of Plant Oils
Plant oils are delicate ingredients that require meticulous handling during formulation. Their shelf life can be significantly shortened when exposed to heat, light, and air, leading to rancidity and loss of effectiveness. As a skincare formulator, it is crucial to comprehend the composition of fats and oils, which are the foundation of many skincare products.
Fatty Acids: The Building Blocks
Fats and oils consist of fatty acids, which are grouped into saturated, monounsaturated (MUFA), or polyunsaturated (PUFA) fatty acids. These fatty acids combine in groups of three to form triglycerides. The key to understanding the heat sensitivity of plant oils lies in the iodine value, a measure of the degree of unsaturation of a fat or oil. Oils with a high iodine value, containing a high percentage of unsaturated fatty acids, are more susceptible to oxidation and rancidity when exposed to heat, light, and air.
Precise Temperature Control in Formulation
When creating the Skin Whipped Body Butter, I carefully monitor and control the temperature to preserve the integrity and potency of the ingredients. I heat Cocoa Butter and Myrica Fruit Wax to no higher than 61 degrees Celsius, as this is the optimal temperature to melt these ingredients without causing damage to their beneficial properties. On the other hand, I avoid heating Kukui and Safflower oils due to their high iodine values of 136-175 and 140-150, respectively. These values indicate that these oils are more prone to oxidation and rancidity, so I take extra precautions to prevent exposure to excessive heat during formulation.
Fatty Acid Composition of Key Ingredients
- Cocoa Butter: Composed of approximately 33% oleic acid (MUFA), 25% palmitic acid (saturated), 32% stearic acid (saturated), and 3% linoleic acid (PUFA), cocoa butter is known for its excellent moisturising and emollient properties.
- Myrica Cerifera Fruit Wax: This natural plant wax contains approximately 45% palmitic acid (saturated), 30% oleic acid (MUFA), 17% stearic acid (saturated), and 3% linoleic acid (PUFA). Its unique fatty acid composition gives it excellent emulsifying and thickening properties, which enhance the stability and texture of the body butter.
- Kukui Oil: Rich in linoleic acid (40-45% PUFA) and alpha-linolenic acid (25-35% PUFA), as well as oleic acid (20% MUFA) and palmitic acid (5-8% saturated), kukui oil is prized for its skin conditioning and nourishing benefits.
- Safflower Oil: Safflower oil boasts a high concentration of linoleic acid (70-80% PUFA) and oleic acid (10-20% MUFA), with smaller amounts of palmitic acid (5-10% saturated) and stearic acid (2-7% saturated). This composition makes safflower oil an excellent skin conditioning and moisturising agent.
